Thanks to staff vigilance a significant quantity of cannabis (81 grams) and 17 suspected methamphetamine capsules were discovered on Sunday 3 November in the grounds of Ohura Prison, west of Taumarunui.
Site Manager Peter Madsen said staff patrolled the boundary of the prison after becoming suspicious and discovered the drugs.
"This is the single biggest drugs find at this prison in our memory."
Mr Madsen said the Department of Corrections, through its Drug Reduction Strategy, has various methods to prevent drug use and contraband in prison.
"We operate visitor checkpoints in conjunction with the local police and regular searches of cells, inmates and prison buildings. We also conduct random drug testing of inmates and drug and alcohol treatment programmes are available to inmates."
The Taumarunui police are now investigating the drug find, which is now undergoing forensic examination. Anyone with any information should contact Constable John Tito of the Taumarunui Police.
The Department of Corrections operates a confidential freephone for anyone with information about criminal activity related to any prison. All information received is investigated before any action is taken. The phone number is 0800 JAIL SAFE (0800 524 572).
Ohura Prison accommodates up to 97 minimum security inmates.
