Prisoners undertaking Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) training in the garage at Auckland Prison will now have the opportunity to learn how to undertake Warrant of Fitness inspections.

CIE Engineering Instructor Kenny Maharaj, who runs the garage, has been recently certified as being able to issue Warrant of Fitness certificates, and he will be training prisoners to gain their qualifications as well.

“We’re looking to start putting all of the Corrections vehicles at Auckland Prison through the garage to get their warrants,” says Engineering Sector Manager Mark O’Neill.

“This will give the prisoners the chance to work through the LTSA Warrant of Fitness checklist, and learn the standards that vehicles have to meet to be warrantable on the road.

“The Auckland Garage is also a Motor Trade Association (MTA) certified repairer, so Corrections vehicles will be able to undertake regular warranting and servicing checks on site,” says Mark.

“We’re hoping that on the back of the work in Auckland, we will be able to expand our WOF operations to our four other garages, and expand our vehicle repairs and maintenance capability to include the South Island over the next 12 months.

“Research shows that prisoners who are able to find sustainable work on release are less likely to reoffend. Prisoners at Auckland Prison Garage are getting real, practical hands on training in working with vehicles, and I believe it will equip them with some excellent skills for their eventual release,” says Mark.
