The Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) Canterbury Prisons catering team had reason to celebrate last night, after winning the Excellence in Training Workplace (Food Services/Catering) Award at the Hospitality Standards Institute Awards.

“We had two teams make the list of finalists in this category, which is a huge recognition of the quality of training being offered through Corrections Inmate Employment,” says National Manager CIE Brent Maughan.

“To have one of our teams win was fantastic, and it’s a credit to the Internal Services team and all the work that they have put into developing and running the catering training programmes offered in prisons,” says Brent.

Prisoners are able to participate in NZQA recognised training while in prison, and earn credits towards qualifications to help them gain employment on release.

“I’m really pleased for CIE, and congratulate them on winning this award,” says Hospitality Standards Institute Chief Executive Steve Hanrahan.

“We have seen a consistently high standard of training being delivered in prisons, and last night's win for Corrections really illustrates that their training is up there with the best being offered in New Zealand.

“CIE have shown a very strong commitment to training over a number of years. HSI are happy to work with CIE, they have a strong team of committed assessors and managers and we absolutely support them in the work that they do,” says Mr Hanrahan.

Research shows that prisoners who find sustainable work on release are less likely to reoffend. Relevant work experience and training are key to finding and keeping employment, and the focus of CIE is to provide relevant, quality prisoner employment and training.

“Our staff are dedicated to training prisoners, and having one of our teams win this award is recognition that the hard work we are putting in across all areas of CIE is making a difference,” says Brent.
