It was two years ago today that the Otago Corrections Facility received its first prisoners on site. Since that time, the prison has received around three thousand prisoners through the Receiving Office.
Prison Manager Jack Harrison says it's been a challenging two years, but he's happy with the way things have gone so far.
"If we were in the hotel business or the health sector we'd say we've had around 200,000 bed nights over the two years, so it's pleasing to come through those sorts of numbers with a good track record."
Mr Harrison says having a new and modern facility in the area has enhanced public safety as well as providing a place where offenders can be dealt with locally.
He says there are big challenges ahead for both Otago and Corrections facilities around the country, but the quality of staff means he's confident they'll be met.
