Ten prisoners have celebrated their graduation from a Universal College of Learning (UCOL) Learning Certificate in Motor Industry.
The 16-week course was hosted in Wanganui and included a collection of unit standards which contribute towards National Certificates in the field of small motors and mechanics.
Wanganui Area Manager – Corrections Inmate Employment Julie Gowan said the course required the prisoners to demonstrate significant commitment.
"The majority of the prisoners on the course live in a unit with an 8am-5pm regime. Given the course ran for 16 weeks and required attendance from 9am to 3pm, the perseverance shown is commendable."
The course included elements on workshop engineering, preventative maintenance and engine operations.
"By completing the course, the prisoners have developed skills which will be useful both in prison and upon release back into society", said Julie Gowan.
