Over 70 Manawatu Prison volunteers attended a Christmas themed concert on the weekend that was put on by prisoners to recognise volunteer efforts.
“We have over 100 volunteers from the local community who give up their time to assist our prisoners in various ways such as through chapel services and literacy support. It is fantastic that the prisoners put on the concert to recognise those efforts and show their thanks for the many services the volunteers provide,” says Prison Manager Peter Howe.
“The prisoners themselves came up with the idea of doing a performance to show their appreciation and I think that in itself shows that they really value the work the volunteers do. The prisoners have shown real dedication in putting the show together and rehearsing and I am sure the volunteers attending were very impressed.
“Although we currently have a number of volunteers we are always looking for more. We encourage anyone interested in volunteering to contact us. Volunteering can be a highly rewarding experience. The part volunteers play in prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration is extremely important. I am very thankful for the volunteers we have coming into the Prison and extremely proud to be part of a community that supports us in this way.”
Around 20 prisoners were involved in the concert which included a Karakia, Waiata, Kapa Haka, songs composed by prisoners and a nativity play involving Christmas carols.
