General Manager Katrina Casey welcomed the presentation of the Minister’s Excellence Award to Shanis Williams - the first probation officer to receive the Award.
Shanis was presented the Award last week by Minister of Corrections Hon Judith Collins, in recognition of the outstanding achievement she demonstrated during probation officer curriculum training and in applying this to the development of sound practice in the role.
“The Award acknowledges Shanis’ leadership qualities, professionalism and her contribution towards fellow students and to the success of the course.”
The Minister’s Excellence Award was established to recognise staff who have acted with distinction during their training. Several Minister's Excellence Awards have been presented this year to corrections officers who have graduated from the Department’s initial training course and the Award has now been extended to probation officers who have completed their curriculum.
Ms Casey said that in addition to Shanis’ capacity for learning and the strong work ethic she had displayed during training, she had also demonstrated many positive attributes in her role of probation officer in the Panmure Service Centre.
“Colleagues have frequently commented on her professionalism and decision making prowess and her ability to work with difficult offenders. They have also remarked on her positive attitude, willingness to take on additional work and her commitment towards helping other staff.”
Probation officers play an important role in the Justice system through ensuring offenders comply with the requirements of their sentence and in helping offenders make the necessary changes to reintegrate into society.
The Minister’s Excellence Award is one way of recognising the important work of probation officers and in encouraging and recognising their professionalism and expertise.
