A checkpoint screening visitors to the family open day at Tongariro-Rangipo prison in the weekend caught out a few people trying to smuggle contraband in.

On Sunday afternoon staff were searching vehicles when they discovered a small zip lock bag in one man’s car, containing what appeared to be crystal methamphetamine says Acting Prison Manager Zak Peacock.

“Staff estimated the quantity of P to be about 2 grams which is a fairly substantial amount. When they questioned the man he admitted the drugs were his. The drugs were seized and the Police were also called to arrest the man.

“This was a particularly good find and shows excellent technique by our staff. At the time the dog handler was temporarily unavailable so the search was done without the services of the drug dog.

“Stopping contraband entering prisons, and apprehending those who do attempt to smuggle it in, is one of Corrections’ highest priorities.”

The Department works constantly to prevent contraband entering our prisons. This includes the use of intelligence, regular searching, increased security and our drug dogs. There are currently 12 drug dogs working around the country says Mr Peacock.

“Many prisoners have addictions to drugs or alcohol when they come to prison – preventing contraband from entering prisons is one part of the solution that will curb these addictions.

“The other part is reducing demand for drugs through effective rehabilitation programmes such as the Department’s six Drug Treatment Units. Currently Tongariro-Rangipo’s random drug test positives are at 8% which is an excellent result.”

Mr Peacock says there were also five other smaller drugs finds during the weekend checkpoint, along with a fake ID which was presented by a female visitor. All offenders were banned from the prison.
