The first prisoners will arrive later this month. This marks a major milestone in the Public Private Partnership between the Department of Corrections and SecureFuture.

The contract with SecureFuture to design, build, finance, operate and maintain Auckland South Corrections Facility was signed in September 2012. The facility build took 30 months and was completed in January 2015. Serco has been contracted by SecureFuture to operate the facility for the next 25 years.

The prison will accommodate up to 360 prisoners with a high security classification and 600 with a classification of minimum, low or low-medium. The prison does not accommodate maximum security prisoners.

Rehabilitation and innovative approaches to reintegration services remain a key Government priority in its drive to reduce re-offending and improve outcomes for all prisoners, with a particular emphasis on Maori prisoners. Corrections is seeking to ensure that through this contract with the private sector, the Department will be positioned to leverage Serco’s experience.
