Funding boost for public safety and reducing re-offending
The budget brought a welcome funding boost for Corrections with $355.6 million allocated over the next four years.
This will ensure we can cope with a rising prison population, maintain public safety and reduce re-offending.
The bulk of the operating funding, $290.6 million, will help address growth in the prison muster which is tipped to reach 9,800 by December this year.
Other funding includes $20 million for the continuation of our Out of Gate reintegration services around the country, $12 million for managing offenders returning from overseas, and $8.8 million to continue and enhance 24-hour GPS monitoring of highest risk offenders.
You can read more about how we’ll use the funding in our fact sheets below or on the media release from Minister of Corrections Judith Collins.
