Introduction

Probation officers must ensure that reports are prepared in a way that will withstand external scrutiny.

Sources of information

Indicate clearly the sources of information used in the report, using titles (e.g. Mr, Dr, etc.) and their full name.

Self-assessment checklist

When preparing the report ask the following questions:

  • Have all appropriate enquiries been completed?
  • Has the offender had sufficient opportunity to contribute to the development of any programme?
  • Does the report provide the court or NZPB with all the information it requires to make an informed decision?
  • Has the report been peer reviewed?
  • Have appropriate records been maintained?
  • Has a risk assessment been made?
  • Would the procedure stand up to external scrutiny?
  • Have all screens in IOMS been updated and completed?
  • Does the report meet timeliness standards?
