An interview should be conducted in person following the initial contact with the victim, provided the victim consents to this. This topic provides information on this interview.

Content of victim interview

If the victim is willing to be interviewed, the interview should cover:

  • the victim's view of the:
    • offence
    • nature of the emotional harm and any consequential loss or damage
    • value of any loss of or damage to property and any consequential loss or damage, and
    • nature of any loss or damage consequential on physical harm
  • any insurance cover for the offending, including:
    • the name and address of the insurance company, and
    • the victim's client/claim number
  • whether the victim has made a claim with ACC under the IPRC Act, and
  • if appropriate, the possibility of meeting with the offender.

A meeting with the offender should be promoted and encouraged where appropriate. A person trained in mediation must be used. Record in the interview notes and in the report whether the victim consents to, or refuses, such a meeting.

If insurance involved

If an insurance company is involved then a representative should be contacted as soon as possible. The insurance company is treated separately as a victim in their own right.

ACC entitlement

If the nature of the loss or harm entitles the victim to ACC cover, ask the victim if a claim has been made and if they agree to ACC being contacted. Ensure a written agreement to contact ACC is obtained from the victim.
