Introduction

When considering potential sentencing options many factors need to be canvassed before making a recommendation.

The range of sentencing options is substantial, with six tiers available within the sentencing hierarchy and the ability to combine almost any of the sentences within a single recommendation.

This chapter outlines:

  • the available sentencing options, including combinations
  • the purposes and principles of sentencing
  • information about the types of offender/offending that each sentence is targeted at/suitable for
  • tools and guidelines to assist in the development of sentencing recommendations, and
  • the effect of new sentences on existing sentences.
