This section describes eight different rehabilitative needs:

  • Violence propensity (VP)
  • Alcohol and other drug (AOD)
  • Gambling
  • Relationships difficulties (RD)
  • Offence-related sexual arousal (ORSA)
  • Offending supportive attitudes and entitlement (OSA&E)
  • Unhelpful lifestyle balance (ULB)
  • Offending supportive associates (OSA)

When needs are identified

Some needs are often referred to as automatic needs because they can be automatically identified in the summary of facts and when the offender offers their version of events. These can be identified during either the full or short pre-sentence assessment interview.

Three needs are only canvassed when undertaking the offending and needs assessment section of the full pre-sentence assessment interview.

These are:

  • OSA&E
  • ULB
  • OSA.

Programme selection and eligibility

Programme selection and eligibility relates to the:

  • type of offending/needs
  • offender’s risk of re-offending
  • offender’s willingness to attend.

Different assessment needs

Some needs (OSA&E, ULB, and OSA) will not be immediately obvious following a simple discussion of offending behaviour. These usually relate to the offender’s deliberate lifestyle choices that impact on their decisions and behaviours.

These needs require an assessment approach different  to that used for other rehabilitative needs.
