This section covers reviewing existing documentation to prepare for a short assessment.

Collating information

Use the pre-sentence document checklist in the short assessment booklet to ensure all the necessary information is available before the interview. The documents required (if they are available) are listed below.

For first time offenders:

  • summary of facts
  • victim impact statement
  • fines summary
  • letters on court file
  • specialist reports (e.g. alcohol, drug, violence)
  • any other relevant documents or reports, and
  • list of active charges (if relevant).

For a repeat offender, all the documents listed above, plus:

  • combined criminal and traffic history
  • alcohol and drug assessments
  • psychiatric reports
  • psychological reports
  • forensic psychiatric services memos or reports, and
  • previous pre-sentence reports.

Access the Department of Corrections' electronic information (IOMS) for previous file information.

Contact Collections if fines default

Contact Collections if the fines summary indicates that the offender is in default of their payments. Contact at this early stage in the assessment process will give Collections an opportunity to:

  • examine the status of the offender's fines and reparation, and
  • provide input into the pre-sentence process.
