Introduction

This chapter outlines the process for carrying out the community detention (CD) specific induction. This is completed at the curfew address, and focuses on the electronic monitoring (EM) equipment and requirements.

This is the final task in setting up a CD sentence.

Timeframe

The CD induction is undertaken after the initial induction at first report in has been completed.

It must be completed prior to, or at the commencement of, the offender's first curfew period.

This induction must be conducted while at the offender's curfew address during the installation and set up of the EM equipment.

Who is responsible?

The senior community work supervisor is responsible for completing the CD induction.

Purposes of the CD induction

The purposes of the CD induction are to:

  • explain the different parts of the EM equipment and how they work
  • explain the role of the senior community work supervisor, probation officer (as applicable) and the EM company
  • go through the CD information booklet with the offender and answer any questions they may have
  • reinforce that any tampering with the EM equipment, or private use of the telephone handset (if applicable), constitutes non-compliance, and
  • provide an overview of:
    • what to do in an emergency
    • what constitutes an emergency, and
    • how it will be verified and dealt with.
Steps to take

The following table outlines the steps for the senior community work supervisor to take to carry out the CD induction using the CD6 Induction Checklist.

Go through the CD information booklet with the offender, and ensure they understand the contents of the booklet.

Go through and explain each of the factors listed on the CD6 Induction Checklist.

Tick off each factor once it has been discussed.

Ensure the offender understands all information that has been discussed.

explain it again before signing the CD6 Induction Checklist.

Make a note in IOMS that the induction has been completed, and file the CD6 Induction Checklist on the offender's community detention file.
