Introduction

This topic provides an overview of the different parts and functions of the EM equipment used for CD.

The two primary parts of the EM equipment are the personal identification device (PID), which is also known as an 'anklet' or 'tag'; and the home monitoring unit (HMU), which is also known as the 'unit' or 'box'.

Home Monitoring Unit (HMU)

The HMU is sometimes also referred to as the 'unit' or 'box'.

The HMU is installed at the curfew address and creates an electronic boundary that the offender must stay within during the curfew period. The HMU operates via either the cell phone network or a telephone landline.

The HMU is about the size of a video player and is illustrated below.

Personal Identification Device (PID)

The PID is sometimes also referred to as an 'anklet' or 'tag'. It is usually fitted around the offender's ankle.

In exceptional circumstances it may be fitted around the offender's wrist with the authorisation of the CPPS operations helpdesk.

The PID communicates with the HMU to monitor the offender. Every time the offender steps outside the electronic boundary the HMU will register this and send a message to the monitoring company.

The PID looks similar to a watch and is illustrated below.
