Introduction

The sentence management process is based on three domains ??? rehabilitation, reintegration, and report and comply.

This volume focuses on those sentences and orders that have a rehabilitative component. They all have a report and comply component, and may also have a reintegrative component. They may also be imposed jointly with sentences that have a report and comply focus (i.e. community detention (CD) and community work (CW)).

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation relates to activities directed towards reducing the risk of re-offending by directly addressing the risk factors that have been determined to have a direct influence on offending. These risk factors include the offender???s:

  • rehabilitative needs
  • motivation
  • attitudes
  • awareness, and
  • ability to manage risk factors directly linked with offending.

Rehabilitation includes:

  • addressing offending
  • responsivity, and
  • pro social influence.
Reintegration

Reintegration focuses on identified problems or deficits that may be obstacles to a non-offending lifestyle.

These identified obstacles may include lack of employment skills or basic work and living skills.

Report and comply

Report and comply objectives apply across all sentences and orders to meet statutory and special requirements of all sentences and orders. This includes clear statements of what we provide within each sentence category to meet minimum requirements.

Offender planning

Assessments of risks, needs and responsivity are used to determine the extent to which these three domains are addressed.

These assessments are carried out through offender planning, in which the approach to the way the sentence is to be carried out is planned. Offender planning is likely to be more successful when the offender is actively involved in this process.
