Before initial induction interview

Before conducting an initial induction interview, the probation officer should undertake a short file review, using the induction checklist. Cover the following tasks:

Review appropriate documents and records to gain an overview of the offender's circumstances. The documents may include:

  • court order/licence
  • combined criminal and traffic history
  • pre-sentence report
  • New Zealand Parole Board (NZPB) report
  • offender information report, and
  • offender warning system (OWS) assessment, if this has already been completed.

Note: This information may be contained in the offender's file. If a file is not available, gather any information from IOMS.

Check IOMS for:

  • safety or risk alerts
  • offender security classification including HRX and OWS status
  • victim notification flags or potential victim issues.

Check for any other CPPS sentences or orders, either new or existing.

Check for DVA protection orders or non-association orders, restrictions or contact with children/young persons etc.

Identify and prepare for any potential problems that may make it difficult for the offender to participate in the induction interview (literacy, language, hearing/speech impairment).
