Introduction

This topic outlines the employment check process if the offender is sentenced to two years imprisonment or less.

Note: This process is completed within 2 working days of notification.

Steps to take for employment check

The following table shows the steps for the CPPS liaison to take on receipt of the employment verification form from Work and Income.

Step

Action

1

On receipt of the employment verification form, make a decision as to whether the form needs to be sent to a specific CPPS service centre, or arrange for verification at the CPPS liaison office.

Note: This decision is made immediately upon receiving the referral.

2

Prior to forwarding the employment verification form:

  • locate the named offender in IOMS, and
  • see if special conditions are attached to the sentence.

3

As the CPPS liaison, you will be granted observation access to the relevant IOMS records in order to gather information whether the offender has any:

  • standard conditions, or
  • special conditions

(Note: Make a note of what these conditions are, for the service centre undertaking the check.).

4

Forward the employment verification form, along with any special conditions the offender may have, to the CPPS service centre closest to where the offender is being released.

Verification

The following table shows the appropriate action(s) to undertake verification.

If the CPPS liaison

 then…

 and…

is able to undertake the verification themselves an assessment can be made on the proposed employment the request is returned by email to the originating Work and Income officer promptly (within two working days from receipt of the employment verification form).
is unable to undertake the verification themselves

the CPPS liaison emails the request to the nearest service centre where the offender is to be released, and a probation officer or service manager makes an assessment on the proposed employment

Note:

The employment verification check is undertaken and completed within two working days of the employment verification form being originally sent from Work and Income to the CPPS liaison, not within two days of the service centre receiving the form

  • the request is returned by email to the originating Work and Income officer promptly (within two working days from receipt of the employment verification form by the CPPS liaison), and
  • a copy of the completed check is copied to the CPPS liaison email address in order to ensure that timeliness has been met.
