Suitability of proposed employment

For offenders being released on conditions or on parole, Work and Income prisoner reintegration teams will ensure that the Department of Corrections is satisfied with any employment opportunity being investigated for the prisoner by the Work and Income staff. This will take place before any interview or job offer is proposed. The check will be managed by CPPS.

Work and Income will provide details of the proposed employment for CPPS to consider.

Employment verification form

The CPPS employment verification form will contain the following information (as filled out by Work and Income staff).

  • offender details
    • prison
    • name
    • PRN
    • release date, and
    • release area
  • type of work
    • industry
    • job title, and
    • name and address of employment, and
  • Work and Income staff member details.

This form will be used for:

  • offenders who are in prison (and are to be released on conditions or parole), and
  • offenders who are released on conditions, or parole, but have worked with Work and Income while they were in prison. These offenders will have already given consent for the employment check to take place.

If an offender has not worked with Work and Income while in prison, but presents themselves to Work and Income after their release, Work and Income will have to gain consent from the offender for CPPS to undertake employment checks.

Work and Income/CPPS interface

A Work and Income staff member:

  • completes the prisoner employment verification form with as much detail as possible about the prospective employment for a prisoner being released on conditions. An example is as follows:
    • Construction (industry)
    • Labourer (specific position)
    • Ed???s Panmure Construction (name of employer)
    • 1150 Panmure Highway (specific physical location of the employer)
    • Full-time, permanent (description of FTE and contract), and
  • emails the completed form to the CPPS liaison in the area closest to where the employment/release area is.
CPPS liaison

The CPPS liaison will be a nominated staff member (or members) from each CPPS area who is/are the interface between Work and Income staff and CPPS staff for this initiative.

The CPPS liaison will:

  • check the CPPS work liaison email address at least twice daily, to ensure that the employment verification forms are distributed promptly to service centres to be checked, and
  • ensure that the employment verification form is returned to Work and Income staff in the prison within the maximum two day time frame.

Note: It is preferable that the employment check is undertaken at the earliest possible opportunity.
