Services provided by Work and Income staff
Work and Income staff will be working with offenders in two work streams:
- offenders sentenced to two years or less, and
- offenders sentenced to over two years.
The table below shows the services available to offenders in each stream.

- access the services up to 8 weeks, and at any point within this time frame, prior to release
- attend a Work and Income seminar
- complete a skills assessment
- develop an employment plan, and/or
- apply for Work and Income financial assistance.

- access advice (provided to sentence planners and probation officers by Work and Income) about suitable types of employment in the area to which the prisoner is being released, based on:
- a skills assessment
- proposed release conditions, and
- known industries with vacancies during the pre-release report process.
- access the programme outlined above (for prisoners serving two years or less). When they are given a release date, the NZPB/Prison Services (PS) notify Work and Income as soon as possible of the decision, and the programme is then offered to the prisoner.
