This topic looks at steps to take to introduce the problem solving module process.

Follow the steps below during the problem solving module.

Explain the problem solving process to the offender. Explain that it includes:

  • looking at why the offending occurred and ways of stopping offending behaviours
  • setting up a plan to deal with the problems that led to the offence
  • setting goals and tasks for the probation officer and offender to make the plan happen, and
  • keeping track of the offender???s progress on the goals and tasks.

Note: The problem solving module process diagram can be shown to the offender.

Ask the offender to describe their understanding of the process.

Listen for anomalies or gaps, and clarify anything that the offender has missed or misunderstood.



Checklist

Check that the offender:

  • is cooperative in the interview process
  • is open to the task
  • takes the discussion seriously
  • demonstrates that they understand the process, and/or
  • is willing to engage in a constructive working relationship with their probation officer.
