Introduction

This topic outlines the focus of the sentence completion interview and details the steps to take for conducting the interview.

Focus of interview

The sentence completion interview should focus on:

  • reviewing the offender’s:
    • response to the sentence/order, and
    • compliance with the conditions of the sentence/order
  • confirming relapse prevention strategies and/or safety plans, and
  • determining the offender’s suitability for further sentences.
Steps to take

Follow these steps to conduct a sentence completion interview.

Step

Action

1

Review the offender’s response to the sentence/release and their compliance with conditions.

2

Review any plans for post sentence support.

3

Review with offender:

  • what they have learnt
  • what they still need to work on, and
  • risks.

4

Reinforce what the offender has achieved.

5

Determine the offender’s suitability for subsequent similar sentences (to inform pre-sentence information in the event that they are convicted of further offending).

6

If the offender is still subject to other sentences/orders, remind them of the ongoing requirements of those sentences/orders.

7

  • Finish the interview, and
  • inform the offender that they will receive a copy of their sentence completion report.
