Steps to take

Before conducting the initial induction interview with an offender, a probation officer should undertake a short file review. Using the induction checklist, follow the steps below.

Reference: Induction checklist, general forms. (please refer to the related links section on this page)

Step

Action

1

Review appropriate documents and records to gain an overview of the offender's circumstances. The documents may include:

  • court order/licence
  • combined criminal and traffic history
  • pre-sentence report
  • parole board report
  • offender information report, and
  • offender warning system assessment, if this has already been completed.

Note: This information may be contained in the offender's file. If a file is not available, gather any information from IOMS.

2

Check IOMS for:

  • safety or risk alerts
  • offender security classification including high risk offender (HRX) and offender warning system status, and
  • victim notification flags or potential victim issues.

3

Check for any other CPPS sentences or orders, either new or existing.

4

Check for Domestic Violence Act (DVA) protection orders or non-association orders, restrictions or contact with children/young persons, etc.

5

Identify and prepare for any potential problems that may make it difficult for the offender to participate in the induction interview (literacy, language, hearing/speech impairment).
