Introduction

This topic contains the procedure for conducting the induction programme for the CWA induction.

This process is to be undertaken only after the work placement assessment has been completed, and the offender has been identified as suitable for an agency placement.

For more details on the agency placement see this part, chapter 3 Work Placement and BWLS Assessment.

Steps to take

Follow these steps to complete the CWA induction.

Step

Action

1

From the previously completed work placement assessment form, confirm the offender's availability for reporting, including:

  • days, times and hours available to attend CW, and
  • other issues, e.g. special needs due to vulnerability, witness protection, contamination, etc.

Notes:

  • The offender may be assigned to more than one agency, work party or centre, to accommodate the days/hours to be worked in the week.
  • The offender may only work a maximum of 10 hours a day and no offender may be allowed to do more than 40 hours per week.
  • Check with the supervising probation officer for other time commitments or sentence requirements, e.g. the offender may be:
    • attending any programmes
    • subject to other sentences/orders, or
    • meeting family/employment commitments, etc.

2

Discuss agency placement options with the offender. If the offender proposes an agency they wish to be placed with, this can be considered (though it may not be approved). Otherwise discuss options with agencies currently offering placements.

3

Issue an instruction to report (ITR) for the three way meeting - between the agency, CPPS representative and the offender.

4

Set up offender's attendance record and reporting frequency in IOMS as follows:

  • record the hours taken for the work placement assessment and induction on the offender's daily attendance sheet and in IOMS, and
  • issue the offender's first attendance record to the CWA supervisor.

5

Record the hours taken for work placement assessment and induction on the attendance record in IOMS.

Note: Time taken to complete induction is credited as sentenced hours worked.

6

File documents and complete the IOMS information.
