Introduction

CWCs are closed at specified times each year to ensure that the sentence is administered equitably. This topic details the occasions of such closures.

When CWCs are closed

CWCs are closed during the following times:

Occasion

Detail

Election/referendum

CWCs close early at 3.00 pm on the day of any:

  • local body election not conducted by postal vote
  • general election, or
  • referendum.

Christmas / New Year

CWCs are closed over the two-week period covering Christmas/New Year. Centres can re-open progressively as staff become available.

CWCs must be fully operational by the third week of January.

Other statutory holidays

CWCs are closed for the day. This includes the Provincial Anniversary Day for the area in which the CWC is located.



Notifying offenders of closure

On any occasion the CWC is to be closed as described above, all offenders that have been directed to report on the closure day(s) must be notified no later than one week prior to the closure.

Notification procedure

Follow this procedure to notify offenders of the closure of the CWC.

Issue each offender that would report on the day(s) the CWC will be closed with a written notice stating:

  • the day of closure, and
  • that they are not to report on that day as previously directed.

If the offender’s next reporting day, after the day of closure, is not their usual reporting day, issue a new direction to report.

File the following documents in the offender file for each offender:

a copy of the notice, and

the original of the direction to report.
