Introduction

Offenders authorised for BWLS training must confirm, at the screening stage, that they are willing to participate.

Gauging an offender’s willingness to participate is recommended at this stage as it will determine if the screening for BWLS needs should proceed.

Use the table to below to determine the next step in the screening process.

If the offender….

then….

agrees to participate

record this on the assessment sheet and continue the screening process.

Advise the offender that:

  • they will not be required to consent to BWLS until the programme has been confirmed and they have been informed of the programme requirements, and
  • they can withdraw their consent to participate at any time during the assessment process and training.

does not agree to participate

record this on the assessment sheet and inform the offender that:

  • they are not eligible to undertake BWLS
  • they will be required to complete their full sentence as CW, and
  • if they decide later that they are willing to participate, they can request to be reconsidered.
