Introduction

The safety of any victim must be a paramount concern for Probation Officers when working with offenders in domestic relationships.

Procedure

Be aware that the victim may be experiencing Battered Woman Syndrome, and follow these steps when working with offenders in domestic relationships.

Note any evidence of Battered Woman Syndrome.

Inform the victim of access to appropriate support agencies.

Take action to protect any victim.

Check whether there are any Protection Order in place.

If there are, take any appropriate action in accordance with the order.

 Note: In particular, action must be taken in relation to any order regarding residence.

Review the management of offenders who are seeking to achieve reintegration with a victim.

Discuss the case with a Service Manager. If appropriate consult the Psychological Service for advice.



Offender's residence

In cases where any control regarding the residence of the offender is able to be exercised, take enforcement or recall action and:

  • get appropriate professional advice, and
  • clearly document the reasons for all practice decisions.
