Guideline |
Detail |
Do not work alone. |
Child abuse is a complex and emotionally demanding area and Probation Officers must be able to consult with, and have support from, management. |
Discuss with a Service Manager |
Discuss any observations or suspicions with a Service or Area Manager unless there is concern for the immediate safety of the child or young person. If a manager is not available, discuss with a colleague. |
Discuss with the offender |
The Probation Officer should discuss any concerns with the offender and provide the offender with information about Child, Youth and Family. |
Document all reasons |
Document reasons for making a report to Child, Youth and Family or the Police, and the name of the person contacted. Differentiate between fact and informed opinion. If a decision is made not to report the matter to Child, Youth and family or the Police the reasons must be recorded and signed-off by the appropriate Service Manager. |
Disclose information if appropriate |
In conjunction with a manager, Probation Officers are encouraged to disclose information to Child, Youth and Family or the Police without the specific authorisation of the offender. Reference: This Chapter, CPS Agreement with CYF, Reasonable grounds for disclosure (please refer to the related links section on this page). |
Health and Safety |
After making the referral to Child, Youth and Family or the Police, discuss the matter with a Service Manager, supervisor or a colleague. |
