Introduction

The purpose of the Privacy Act 1993 is to “promote and protect individual privacy”.

The Privacy Act establishes the principles which control how private and public sector agencies:

  • collect, use and disclose information relating to individuals, and
  • provide access to personal information.

Intent of this chapter

This chapter provides a summary of the Privacy Act in a context limited to the way it affects the work of Probation Officers.

Only the principles of the Act are detailed, rather than each section or part.

If further information is required:

  • refer directly to the principles and the Act, or
  • seek advice from the Operations Help Desk at Head Office.
