Objective
The objective of this agreement is to enhance community safety by reducing the incidence and effects of crime, and to maintain law and order by:
- clearly defining the agencies' responsibilities and accountabilities to each other
- enhancing the agencies' collaborative relationships with each other
- acknowledging that both agencies have some common goals and encouraging staff to meet these goals, and
- encouraging co-operation and co-operative working methods amongst staff.
Topics covered
The following topics are covered in the schedules to the MoU:
- the exchange of information about prisoners to ensure their health, safety and secure custody
- release of information to victims of offences
- clients of Police Witness Protection Scheme
- payment for Department of Corrections' use of Police cells
- communication and media protocol between the NZ Police and the Department of Corrections
- sharing of information relating to Highest Risk Offenders, and
- sharing of information relating to offenders subject to Extended Supervision Orders.

Standards
National standards of service delivery have been established between the New Zealand Police and the Community Probation Service regarding:
- variations or discrepancies with police summaries
- Police access to pre-sentence reports
- regular meetings to discuss family violence initiatives
- provision of relevant information to assist in the preparation of pre-sentence reports
- advice relating to the arrest and details of any hearing of a person or warrant for a CPS matter
- Police advice to CPS of any high-risk situations involving CPS offenders
- Police assistance to CPS staff in serving summonses or other processes where staff safety may be at risk, and
- Police provision of access for CPS staff to interview offenders in order to prepare pre-sentence reports.
