Tasks at each phase

Within the offender management process, the principal corrections officer (PCO) has a number of specific tasks associated with each prisoner’s plan. The tasks that must be carried out at each phase of the process are as follows:

Post sentencing assessment

Approves specialist referrals.

Prepare offender plan

Receives and approves the plan from the sentence planner.

Manage offender plan

  • Selects a case officer for the prisoner.
  • Communicates the plan and briefs all unit staff.
  • Monitors case officer’s performance.
  • Provides feedback and support.
  • Monitors plan progress and ensures reviews are completed within timeframe.
  • Approves changes to the plan resulting from reviews.
  • If sentence planner review is required, refers to the PCO, sentence planning.

Prepare for release

  • Receives advice from the New Zealand Parole Board (Parole Assessment).
  • Notifies the case officer to carry out pre-release, final or transitional review activities.
  • Quality assures and signs-off case officer’s review.
  • Notifies CPPS of any community based sentence.
