Definition
Collaborative problem-solving is a response whereby the officer seeks to support the prisoner in finding a solution to a problem or conflict that the prisoner is facing.
Key elements
Key elements of this approach are:
- Remind the prisoner that the problems “belong” to him or her. You are willing to assist, but will not take responsibility for the problem.
- Communicate the idea that “knee-jerk” reactions to problems often make the situation worse, as well as sometimes creating a new set of problems.
- Convey the idea that there are always pro-social alternatives available to deal with problems – even if, in some cases, it means simply choosing to put up with a stressful situation.
- Communicate to the prisoner that the costs of not dealing with the problem are likely to outweigh any benefits.
- Communicate to the prisoner that this is an opportunity to learn and practice new skills.
Procedure
