Introduction

The first part of the manual gives broad information that you need to be familiar with before looking at the process in detail. It explains, in broad terms:

  • the offender management process
  • prisoner categories
  • assessment tools used in offender management
  • the roles and tasks of all prison staff who are involved in the offender management process
  • active management which includes knowledge, communication, responsiveness, exerting influence and motivational enhancement.

Focus of the manual

Prison staff at all levels have a part to play in offender management. The focus of this manual, however, is to address in detail the tasks to be carried out by those who are directly involved in the process of prisoner management.
