Admit a prisoner

Your tasks for admitting a prisoner are outlined in PPM C.01: Prisoner Receptions.

Assess at risk and immediate needs

Using the new arrival risk assessment form and the immediate needs checklist, assess whether the prisoner is at risk and what their immediate needs are, then take appropriate action.

Note: At some sites this procedure may be carried out by unit or wing staff.

Issue appropriate information

Having assessed the prisoner for at-risk and immediate needs, and taken appropriate action:

  • give the prisoner appropriate written information including an offender management booklet (when available), and
  • explain the key points of the offender management process.

Note: This may be done as you induct a prisoner.

See: Chapter 2-3 “Induct Prisoner”.

Application for cancellation of a sentence of imprisonment and substitution of home detention

When a short term serving prisoner (sentenced to 24 months or less) arrives from court, check the warrants to determine whether the court has granted the prisoner leave to apply for cancellation of a sentence of imprisonment and substitution of home detention.

Where leave has been granted, the forms PPM A.12.F1, PPM A.12.F2, PPM A.12.F3 and PPM A.12.F4 are placed in the prisoner’s file during the prison induction process by the receiving officer.

Ready to be placed

The prisoner is now ready to be placed in a residential unit or wing.

See: Chapter 2-2 “Place Prisoner in Unit or Wing”.

Complete the receiving tasks

Use the section of the reception information checklist headed “Receiving Officer” to complete the following receiving tasks:

  • Sign off the actions so far completed.
  • Print and file the pre-sentence report.
  • Call for any documents not yet received, e.g.:
    • summary of facts, and
    • Judge’s sentencing notes, from the sentencing court.
  • Note and file any other reception information.
  • Compile or update the prisoner file.
