Introduction
This chapter summarises what is involved when you induct a prisoner by
- informing them with accurate and timely information in a manner that can be easily understood, and
- addressing their immediate needs or referring them for prompt action.

Who does it
A unit or wing officer and / or receiving officer induct the prisoner.
When you do it
You induct the prisoner within 24 hours of receiving them in the unit.

What you do
The steps for inducting a prisoner are summarised below.
- Review the “Immediate Needs Checklist” form (A.06.01.F1) and take any action that is indicated.
- Interview the prisoner using “Induction Interview” form (A.06.01.F2), making sure you get all the necessary information.
- Enter data into IOMS.
- Outline support staff availability.
- Address all identified immediate needs or refer them on.
- Give the prisoner an offender management booklet if they don’t have it already.
- Get the prisoner to sign forms as required.
- Sign the forms yourself, as required.
