Introduction

This chapter summarises what is involved when you induct a prisoner by

  • informing them with accurate and timely information in a manner that can be easily understood, and
  • addressing their immediate needs or referring them for prompt action.

Who does it

A unit or wing officer and / or receiving officer induct the prisoner.

When you do it

You induct the prisoner within 24 hours of receiving them in the unit.

What you do

The steps for inducting a prisoner are summarised below.

  1. Review the “Immediate Needs Checklist” form (A.06.01.F1) and take any action that is indicated.
  2. Interview the prisoner using “Induction Interview” form (A.06.01.F2), making sure you get all the necessary information.
  3. Enter data into IOMS.
  4. Outline support staff availability.
  5. Address all identified immediate needs or refer them on.
  6. Give the prisoner an offender management booklet if they don’t have it already.
  7. Get the prisoner to sign forms as required.
  8. Sign the forms yourself, as required.
