Introduction

This chapter summarises how you determine the security classification of a prisoner, based on the risks that while in prison they may:

  • escape
  • do harm to themselves or others
  • get involved in illegal activities, and / or
  • behave in a disruptive or destructive manner.

Note: The security classification is one of the inputs to the post-sentencing assessment phase, detailed in Part 3 “Post-Sentencing Assessment”.

Relevant forms and tools

The forms and tools you will use when you classify the prisoner include:

  • PPM A.08.02.F1: Initial Security Classification for Female Prisoners
  • PPM A.08.03.F1: Initial Security Classification for Male Prisoners

Note: Security classification is now completed in IOMS. These forms will be used only if the IOMS system is not working.
