Introduction
There are five categories of prisoner:
- remand
- short serving
- maintenance
- intervention
- functional support
Procedure
Follow these steps to determine the prisoner's category.
- For all prisoners other than remand, determine the prisoner's risk of re-conviction and re-imprisonment (RoC*RoI) level using the RoC*RoI tool on IOMS.

- Use the table below to determine the prisoner’s category.

- if the prisoner is a remand prisoner, and
- the time spent on remand is longer than 8 weeks.
Note: Assessments need not be completed if time on remand is less than 8 weeks.

If time to serve is less than 26 weeks from SCD.

- if RoC*RoI level is “low”, and
- if time to serve is longer than 26 weeks.

| intervention |
- if RoC*RoI level is “high”, and
- if time to serve is longer than 26 weeks.
