General Information

  1. Designated pay telephones are available for approved prisoner use during the hours of unlock with the Prison Manager’s approval.
  2. A list of local prohibited numbers is produced and authorised by Prison Manager.
  3. Any changes to authorised phone contacts are completed according to each Prison Manager’s approved timetable.
  4. The cost of verifying international numbers is at the prisoner’s expense.
    • Newly sentenced prisoners will have access to one free phone call within New Zealand to advise next of kin of their location when first admitted to prison.
    • Remand prisoners and sentenced prisoners with pending civil or criminal proceedings have reasonable access, free of charge, to a telephone to contact their legal counsel.
    • Prisoners of non-New Zealand citizenship must be given reasonable access to a phone, free of charge, to contact a consular representative of their country.
  5. When prisoners placed on non-voluntary segregation ask to contact their lawyer / solicitor in order to seek advice about their situation, they are;
    • to be given a telephone call, at no cost to them, to their lawyer / solicitor
    • and further reasonable on-going telephone contact with the prisoner's lawyer / solicitor, free of charge, will be facilitated as necessary.
  6. All prisoners have access to those global 0800 and 0508 numbers authorised by the General Manager Prisons Service.
  7. Prisoners are allowed access to other 0800 (Telecom) and 0508 (Clear) numbers in their list of contact numbers if approved by the Prison Manager.
