Procedure Standard
- Approved diets are provided for prisoners having a medical condition which necessitates dietary control or treatment.
Procedure
- A medical diet is prescribed or modified by the Medical Officer or registered nurse on the Diet Recommendation Form.
- A registered dietitian is consulted where required.
- The prison nurse provides the Diet Recommendation Form to the kitchen for implementation as soon as practicable.
- The prison nurse completes the Advice of Prisoner Health Status Form and forwards to the Unit Manager.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Medical Officer
- A medical diet is prescribed or modified by the Medical Officer or registered nurse on the Diet Recommendation Form.
- A registered dietitian is consulted where required.
- Establish timeframes for diet review which is to be recorded on the Diet Recommendation Form.
Prison Nurse
- Monitor prisoner's health status.
- Prescribes or modifies a medical diet, or refers the prisoner to the Medical Officer for medical diet consideration.
- Establish diets for diagnosed conditions within menu guidelines if prescribing or modifying.
- Consults with the kitchen and arranges the diets with Catering Instructor.
- Monitors review dates for medical diets and advise kitchen of all changes and cancellations.
Catering Instructor
- Prepare diet menus.
- Supervise preparation and delivery of medical diets.
- Modify diet as instructed on Diet Recommendation Form.
