Pain Relief

  • All prisoners receive prompt pain relief

Prisoners Detained 1 year or more Prisoners detained 1 year or more

Prisoners Detained 1 year or more Prisoners detained 1 year or more may receive the following treatment.

  1. For those showing previous dental responsibility:
    1. Provision of single or multi-surface metallic or non metallic restorations, i.e. amalgams, composite of glassionmer restorations only.
    2. Treatment of acute and chronic periodontal disease.
    3. Root canal treatment of anterior teeth only.
    4. Extractions where appropriate.
    5. Minor oral surgical operations, including the removal of impacted 3rd molars.
    6. An annual oral assessment at prisoner's request.
    7. Other appropriate treatment as required.
  2. For those showing no previous dental responsibility:
  1. Relief of pain only, i.e. dressing and/or extractions.
  2. Treatment of acute periodontal conditions.
  3. Other appropriate treatment as required.

Prisoners Detained for less than 1 year Prisoners detained for less than 1 year

Prisoners Detained for less than 1 year Prisoners detained for less than 1 year:

  1. Relief of pain only, i.e. dressings and/or extractions.
  2. Other appropriate treatment as required.

Previous Dental Responsibility

  • The prison dentist is the sole judge of what constitutes previous dental responsibility, based upon his/her dental judgement
