This section provides guidelines for prison staff in how to convey to prisoners advice about the death of family members in an appropriate way and

  • Outlines the legislative requirements placed on the Department of Corrections in relation to a prisoner dying whilst in the lawful custody of the Chief Executive.
  • Details:
    • immediate response procedures;
    • guidelines for managing a prisoner death in an appropriate cultural and / or religious manner;
    • advice to external agencies and nominated contact person or the next of kin.
  • Details the guidelines for conveying to prisoners that a family member has died.

This section is issued by the Chief Executive under the authority of section 196 of the Corrections Act 2004.
