- Prisoners are received into a prison in accordance with legislative requirements
Performance Standards
- Receiving staff are competent to implement reception procedures.
- Hours for the reception of prisoners to a prison are between 7.00am and 8.00pm except under an arrangement between the Prison Manager and the Police, a Court Registrar or a security contractor, or in exceptional circumstances.
- Prisoners being received are held in safe and secure conditions.
- Unclassified prisoners are treated as high risk segregated prisoners.
- Prisoners are treated according to their security status and category.
- Prisoners are not received in to a prison without a valid warrant / committal order.
- Prisoners are not received where the prison’s agreed maximum muster level has been reached.
- The prisoner's physical condition is examined and documented by health staff where there is evidence or suspicion that they have been injured or assaulted.
- Prisoner information is entered and stored in IOMS.
- Each prison has a documented local requirement for checking that all information entered on IOMS relating to the prisoner’s sentence(s) and time spent on pre-sentence detention (remand) is entered correctly.
- Judges’ Sentencing Notes are read on receipt and checked against warrant of commitment information that has been loaded onto IOMS, with any anomalies checked with the appropriate court as soon as possible.
- Victim impact reports are immediately shredded if received.
- The reception of young prisoners (under the age of 17 years) is to be managed in accordance with the PPM D.02 Young Prisoners.
- National Office Operations Advisers are to be informed of the reception of any prisoner under the age of 17 years.
