The service ceases when the prisoner is:

  • released from prison on completion of their sentence or to Parole or to a Community Residential Centre.

OR

  •  where the prisoner leaves the unit to return to the general prison population as a result of the prisoner deciding to leave the Unit; or as a result of the Unit Manager (after consulting the Runanga) removing the prisoner from the Unit.
Graduation

Prisoners who successfully complete a placement in Maori Focus Units are presented with a certificate signed by the Unit Manager. These certificates record the specific courses and programmes completed by the prisoner while resident at the Unit.  Prisoners appearing before the Parole Board will receive their certificate prior to their appearance.

Prisoners are deemed to have completed the MFU placement if:

  • they have completed a minimum of six (continuous) months in the unit
  • their participation was judged adequate e.g., active involvement in the life of the unit, participated in available courses, completed the Maori Therapeutic Programme if eligible
  • they were not expelled from the unit for misconduct or inadequate participation.
