Procedure Standards
- Elevators are maintained regularly to remain at a safe and efficient standard at all times.
- Movement is enabled between floors at all times, of personnel, prisoners and equipment, including meal and laundry trolleys.

Procedure
- All elevators are to be maintained regularly.
- An officer must accompany all prisoners being moved between floors via the elevators. As approved by the Prison manager, exception to the above rule are the prisoners approved to move the food trolleys from level 1 to level 2 & 4.
- The Internal Services Manager is required to seek from the Prison Manager approval for delegated prisoners to move trolleys unescorted. The Internal Services Manager is required to inform all staff, and monitor those prisoners with the above approval for any potential security risk and provide feedback to the Prison Manager.
- Elevators 1, 2 & 4 have prisoner cages, and are the only ones to be used for moving prisoners. Prisoners are to be secured in the cage when being transported via the elevators.
- Elevator 3 moves between all floors, including the plant rooms and has no cage. Under NO circumstances are prisoners to be moved using this elevator without prior written approval from the Prison manager.
- In the event of fire or earthquake the elevators are not to be used. Access between levels will be via the emergency stairwell system.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
All Staff:
- Report any irregularities in the running of the elevators immediately. Secure ALL prisoners in the elevator behind the grill, prior to any movement.
- When letting prisoners out of the elevator, first check that the area is clear for the prisoners to alight from the elevator.
- When food or laundry is being transported, the prisoner enters the elevator with the trolley. The Master Control operator controls the lift, and monitors the prisoner’s movements.
- Do not exceed maximum carrying Capacity when moving Prisoners by elevator
