Procedure standard

Clothes and bedding are maintained to a suitable level of hygiene and are maintained in a good state of repair.

Procedure

General

  1. All clothing issued is to be maintained in a good state of repair. Prisoners are not to deface clothing in any way and may be required to pay for any clothing wilfully damaged by them
  2. All prison-issue clothing is to be replaced in a fair wear and tear basis.
  3. Upon discharge, clothing is to be assessed for re-issue. If suitable, clothing is to be laundered and repaired as required for re-issue to prisoners.
  4. All used footwear is to be reassessed as to condition, sanitised and re-issued if appropriate.
  5. Appropriate safety clothing for prisoners in industry is to be provided
  6. Prison-issue clothing is to be laundered at least twice a week.
  7. Sheets, towels, duvet covers, pillowcases and outer clothing are to be laundered in the unit machine.
  8. Personal items of clothing (underwear) are to be laundered in the unit machine.
  9. Bed linen is to be collected from the Receiving Office daily or as otherwise directed by the Internal Services Manager.
  10. Laundry will be exchanged on a one-for-one basis. The unit officer is to ensure all lined is exchanged twice weekly.
  11. Unit Officers are to ensure prisoners maintain a high degree of clothing cleanliness and presentation.
  12. The Unit PCO is to report any non-compliance with the weekly exchange of bed linen to the Internal Services Manager

Laundry Drying

  1. Dryers are provided for laundry drying and under no circumstances are the security mesh or furniture to be used for the hanging of linen or clothing.

Special Needs Unit

  1. Six rip proof gowns and ten rip proof blankets will be kept in the Special Needs Unit for use in safe cells.

Health Centre

  1. All bedding used in the Health Centre is to be forwarded to laundry as required.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Unit Manager / PCO

  1. Conduct weekly check that bedding is being laundered on specified days and that stock levels for replacements are maintained.

Corrections Officers

  1. Call for laundry at a set time on the day prior to laundry collection and issue on a one-for-one basis.
  2. Ensure that prisoners regularly change bedding.
  3. Ensure that prisoners have the opportunity to change clothes for laundering at least twice weekly.
  4. Issue towels on a one-for-one basis in unit when kit change occurs.
  5. Advise prisoners that personal garments are to be washed in the unit washing machine and no clothing is to be dried in the unit yard or on furniture.

CIE Personnel

  1. Develop and in issue laundering roster to units specifying day, time and method of kit change.
