- Prisoners are provided with encouragement and the means to maintain an acceptable level of hygiene.

Available Facilities
- Prisoners will be provided with access to a working toilet, and a hot water hand-washing sink with running water. Shower facilities will be available to each inmate on a daily basis.
- Unit staff may compel a prisoner to shower if necessary for hygienic reasons.
Hair Care
- Hair care services for prisoners in both general population and locked units will comply with applicable health requirements.
- Barbering facilities will be provided for hair cutting, but remand prisoners are not permitted to significantly change their appearance prior to trial or the completion of court proceedings.
- Where a prisoner does change his appearance to the extent that this invalidates his identification card, he must be taken to the Receiving Office to have his photograph updated.
Hygiene Promotion
- The Prison is to actively display and make available educational material covering personal hygiene issues and basic dental care.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
Unit Manager
- Ensure an acceptable level of prisoner hygiene is maintained in the unit.
- Reconsider appropriateness of placement in the unit where a prisoner continually behaves in a manner that is unhygienic.
Corrections Officers
- Ensure that new arrivals are given their free issue of toiletries.
- Ensure that the hygiene of prisoners in the housing unit is of a high standard.
- Adhere to the unit desk file in relation to time allotted to prisoners to conduct their personal hygiene requirements.
- Take remedial action with prisoners that do not meet the required standard of hygiene, this may include education, supervision or compulsion.
- Identify any prisoner that may have hygiene problems due to a medical condition or a disability and facilitate a best-fit solution to meet their needs.
