Corrections was established in 1995 and during the 2006/2007 financial year:
- managed 67,684 new sentences, remand prisoners and orders: 22,268 prison-based (new sentences and remand periods), and 45,416 community-based
- operated 20 prisons (with a total capacity of around 8,459 beds) and around 150 Community Probation & Psychological Services nationwide

Corrections is one of the largest government departments, with over 6,000 (6,611 as at 30 September 2007) full-time equivalent staff, including around:
- 3,194 corrections officers
- 709 probation officers
- 55 facilitators
- 238 community work supervisors
- 86 psychologists
- 271 instructors
- 159 nurses
- 1,111 head office staff
Financial statistics
Received Crown Revenue of $742 million, $36 million from other sources and has assets of over $1.88 billion (these numbers are GST exclusive).
Prison-based sentences and orders
Corrections had an average nationwide prison population of 7,734 prisoners during 2006/2007.
Statistics about prison-based sentences (30 June 2007):
- Rate of imprisonment per head of national population: 185 per 100,000.
- Cost per prisoner per day: $209.97
- Break-out escapes: 0.10 per 100 prisoners
- Positive random drug tests: 13 per cent

Corrections have prepared about:
- 31,940 pre-sentence and oral reports and 118 psychological reports for courts
- 5,183 pre-release reports, 3,406 home detention reports, and 980 psychological reports for the Parole Board
- 462 home leave reports.
