Why Corrections?

Corrections is a multi-functional and dynamic government department, driven by a vision to reduce re-offending and protect the public through capable staff and effective partnerships. The Department manages prison-based and community-based sentences and orders imposed by courts and the Parole Board.

Since our establishment in 1995 following the justice sector reform, we have become one of the largest government departments, employing over 7,000 staff.  Of these we have over 5,800 staff in the field managing our 20 prisons and more than 150 Community Probation and Psychological Services locations nationwide.

Our staff are skilled and passionate individuals dedicated to creating a positive change in someone else’s life. We will always need people with these attributes to join us in our ongoing work to reduce re-offending and protect the public.

We have a very diverse workforce who accept and celebrate different cultures, we are committed to the Treaty of Waitangi and we promote the use of te reo Māori and Tikanga Māori across the department.

We recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our staff through our PRIDE Chief Executive's Awards, Service Recognition Awards and the New Zealand Prison Services Medal.

Corrections is a challenging and rewarding field with many opportunities for professional and personal development. We hope you’ll be inspired to have a career with us.
